Dakota Woodlands is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. Dakota Woodlands is unique in many ways. They are the only shelter specifically for families who are homeless in our community.

Families stay as long as necessary to move from homelessness to homes of their own, but on average stay for two months. During this time, families are provided with a variety of educational and supportive services which address the issues related to homelessness, and help them to successfully obtain and maintain permanent housing.

Ways to Volunteer

Volunteer opportunities at Dakota Woodlands are available for individuals and groups. We have groups assist with many different projects throughout the year and would be happy to discuss your particular interests and how that fits with our needs. Volunteer times are as flexible as your schedule!

Opportunities for individuals include:

  • Share your talent or skills; music, yoga, an exercise class, crafts, parenting, career skills (interviewing, resumes, etc.)
  •  Assist in the kitchen, child care, cleaning, sorting, organizing

We have opportunities for individuals to volunteer on a regular or irregular schedule

Opportunities for groups include:

  • Plan and supervise a craft project for children or adults (t-shirt painting, card stamping, scrap-booking, etc.)
  • Plan and serve Saturday or Sunday brunch
  • Plan and organize a special themed meal with decorations or a barbecue and games Have a special pampering event just for the adult residents.
  • Adopt-a-room…Have your group design and decorate a room at our facility.
  • Plant and care for our vegetable garden in the spring and summer months
  • Donate items for our resident's store. Each resident has a "punch card" that they can use to purchase personal or household items for themselves and/or their children at our store. They get card punches for chores, goals met, etc.
  • Special cleaning: choose a room or wing to thoroughly clean (windows, window sills, radiators, floor to ceiling for meeting rooms, play rooms, etc.)
  • Collect items from your neighbors or group such as like paper products, garbage bags, office supplies (Please call us to discuss our current needs and the timing of your drive.)
  • Gift cards are always appreciated!
  • Organize a fundraiser to benefit the shelter (e.g. bake sale, coin collection, garage sale).
