I was in 8th
grade when I rode the late bus home after a hard basketball practice one winter
evening. I was hungry, thirsty and cold. My family lived on a farm
four miles away from the last bus drop-off, so my mom met me there in an
already warm car. It was dusk and the idea of getting home to a warm house and
hot meal was keeping my spirits up.
Perhaps you can
relate to that desire to just ‘land’. It’s been a tough season, or
longer, and the idea of hunkering down in a warm, safe place sounds too good to
be true.
After stepping
off the bus, and waving a weary greeting to my mother, I opened the back
passenger door & threw my bags in to lighten my load before climbing in the
front seat. Out of the blue my mom drove away, in a warm car, off to that
warm home & hot meal - without me!
Now I could take
this blog along the lines of Jesus being left behind by his parents too, which
he was (Luke 2:41-51), but I’d rather like to consider how we’ve all had
seasons of being stuck in a place we shouldn’t be. Sometimes it’s a
memory, a relationship, a hostile work environment, a way of life, or perhaps
even an era in life you loved. No matter what the ‘place’, these things are
holding you somewhere other than a healthy here and
now. They keep you from landing. You remain cold &
thirsty.
My mother,
knowing that her daughter is usually a chatter box, realized after a short
while that something was amiss in the backseat. After finding me missing,
she whipped the Subaru around as quickly as she could and pulled back to rescue
her daughter and bring me to where I belonged. What a beautiful picture that is
reflected in scripture; Jesus wants to come and rescue us, (you weren’t
designed to do this all alone), and bring us to where we belong.
This weekend we
will offer you the chance to let go, get replenished and move on. Wherever you
may find yourself stuck, there is freedom available that feels much like a warm
home and hot meal. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 It’s a promise that’s
available to you even now.
We’ll see you
and anyone you want to bring along to experience His blessing this Sunday at
10am!
