“It Happens Every Year…”

Every year there’s a sickening “déjà vu moment” the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas. Let me explain…

The day after Thanksgiving. We call it “Black Friday” (it supposedly puts merchants in the black). I think we should re-name it “black and blue Friday.” Why? Because consumers go nuts and resort to violence in trying to beat others to the bargain aisles. All over the country, reports of bloodshed roll in as bargain-obsessed/sleep-deprived/frenzied shoppers get carried away going after door buster deals.

Every year, it’s the same thing. Every year, I get sick to my stomach just reading about it.

The day after Christmas. We have no official title for this day. My suggestion would be “Letdown _________” (this year it will be Monday). Why? Because the Christmas hype never lives up to reality. The thought of all the gifts under the tree bringing us happiness fades like a Viking’s football season. In a matter of hours, all the buildup, all the preparation, all the “ho-ho-ho’s” quickly turn into “ho-ho-hums” after the last gift is unwrapped. There’s nothing as over as Christmas.

We wake up post-Christmas and realize (déjà vu) that we’ve been duped once again. Conned by our culture. Swindled by our society. We did everything we were told to do. We consumed. We even over-consumed. And we end up with nothing to show for it all except January’s Visa bill.

It happens every year…

Black and Blue Friday is over. Too late to do anything about it.

Letdown Monday has yet-to-come. Maybe we can make this Christmas different. I sure hope so.
