Open Arms

Open Arms of Minnesota provides home-delivered meals for people living with illness in our community. Open Arms began preparing and delivering meals in 1986, serving five clients in the first week. In 2010, we delivered our 2 millionth meal with the help of hundreds of volunteers! Open Arms currently serves to approx. 650 people living with breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, MS and ALS each week. We also provide meals to family members or caregivers of our clients.

Each delivery includes five entrées, sandwiches, homemade soup, milk, fresh fruit, delicious dessert and some breakfast items, including cereal. Volunteers make this meal program possible by helping with meal preparation, delivery, office projects and special events. Together, we work to ensure that no one living with illness in our community goes hungry.

Ways To Volunteer

Meal Delivery

Volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday, between 11am and 2pm. A typical route consists of 3 - 6 stops, and takes about an hour or two. We are always looking for volunteers to adopt a weekly route or to help on an on-call basis.  You must complete the New Volunteer Orientation (about an hour)and supply your own vehicle.  You can even invite friends and family to come with you for the  deliveries!

Our Woodbury campus is now a test site to become a hub for Open Arms!  On Tuesdays, you can pick up the meals to deliver (the Woodbury/Cottage Grove/Oakdale areas) at the church at 11am and return the bags to the church instead of Minneapolis.  This will help expand the delivery area in our area and help Open Arms!  If you are interested, contact Lisa Adams at 651-294-7747 or lisaadams@crossroadschurch.cc.

In The Kitchen

Baking, chopping, stirring or packing – there is always something going on in the Open Arms kitchen. Kitchen volunteers assist with meal preparation and packaging, with the two hour shifts ranging between 9:00 am and 10:00 pm weekdays, or on weekends between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.  You must complete the New Volunteer Orientation (about an hour) and the Kitchen Training (about an hour) to get started!

More Ways

If phones and computers are your forte, we’d love to meet you. The two-hour volunteer opportunities in the office include receptionist duties and administrative support.

Open Arms organizes and participates in a wide variety of events and fundraisers throughout the year, which always include volunteer opportunities. From gathering auction items three months before an event to checking out guest's auction items out the day-of (as one small example), we have a spot for you!
