DEVOS  February 18 & 19, 2012
PASSAGE: Proverbs 13:20
You will most likely find GUARDRAILS in potentially dangerous areas of the road or highway...they are not placed in middle of the actual area of danger. The GUARDRAILS are placed “just inside”... or, “in between” you and the danger zone.

In other words, the goal of the GUARDRAIL is to create a “small accident” in order to keep you from having a much “larger accident.” And so, in this series, we have been asking the question:
What would it look like if we had GUARDRAILS in the other areas of our life as well? What would it look like if GUARDRAILS were put in place...not only on the roads...but in other arenas as well...like...our FINANCES...our RELATIONSHIPS...our MARRIAGE...our BUSINESS...our MORALS... our REPUTATION.

In fact, God says that this fact is ESPECIALLY TRUE when it comes to our RELATIONSHIPS; the people we choose to associate with ands call our comrades our FRIENDS. And what’s amazing is that the best place to find this TRUTH is actually in the Bible. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.”

I remember parents always telling me not to hang out with so-and-so. The reason why they did that is clear to me as an adult. It is because, like Proverbs 13:20 puts so well, FRIENDS DETERMINE THE DIRECTION AND THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE.

DEVOTIONAL POINT: We need to have the WISDOM and DISCERNMENT to develop the RIGHT KIND of FRIENDSHIPS with the RIGHT KIND of people. Friendships are powerful because your friends determine the direction and quality of your life.

Why is this true? Why is this statement not just an opinion/suggestion/good idea...BUT a principle of life? The thing that makes it good is the thing that makes it bad or wonderful. We crave acceptance and acceptance leaves us open to influence. Are we choosing to be influenced be the influence.
