There will be ribs, games and other great food! This will also be the first time that our Eagan and Woodbury teams will be meeting together. If you have not RSVP yet, please do so here.
DEVOS February 11 & 12, 2012
PASSAGE: Proverbs 6:6-11 & Proverbs 6:30-34
Sluggards are named after a slug. Slugs are slimy, snail-like creatures that have no shell and roll along purposelessly at a painfully slow pace. And what Solomon says again and again is Don’t be like the slug. Instead, he says to be like an ant. Read Proverbs 6:6-11 & Proverbs 6:30-34.
Here’s the truth about us: we’ve all been given a vineyard or field by God. Our field is our one and only life. Our time. Our talents. Our treasures. Our family. Our relationships. Our body, mind, soul. And God has given us this “field” to work it. To develop it. To use it for some good. Everybody gets a vineyard. Everybody gets a chance. Everybody gets an opportunity. Some go all ant-like and make something beautiful with their field. Others go all slug-like and neglect their field.
Procrastination breeds procrastination. Excuses breed excuses. Laziness breeds more laziness. Before you know it, a relationship dies or an opportunity is lost or a child rebels or a bad habit is formed or a dream fades or a life is ruined.
Look back at Proverbs 6:6-8: “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and be wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.”
WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THE ANT? 2 things: (1) The importance of self-leadership. They take the initiative on their own. They’re self-starters. (2) The importance of delayed gratification. Even though it may be summer they carry off food for the winter and they know they have to endure pain right now in order to enjoy a pay-off later. Ants work today for tomorrow.
DEVOTIONAL POINT: So…I want us to go back to our vineyard. Our lives. I want us to look for that one area of inactivity. That one pocket of laziness. Maybe it’s a relationship that’s being ignored. Or maybe it’s my finances that are a mess. Or maybe it’s my body that I’m abusing. Or my soul…my relationship with God that’s being neglected.
There are 3 questions that I want you to interact with.1) What do I need to focus on (What’s my greatest pocket of laziness?) 2)What’s my greatest obstacle (What’s going to hold me back?)
3) What’s my first step and when am I going to take it each day or week?
