Rt 66 SOAP for Monday, December 5

SOAP = Scripture Observation Application Prayer

Jonna Fantz

S: I Timothy 1:12-17

O: Paul’s awareness that he is the worst of all sinners is inspiring. Right after his discussion about the law and how it is for people who are caught up in some really nasty sins (vs.8-11). But that reflection on sin inevitably leads to Paul thinking about his own sin. He sees himself as the chief of all sinners and a demonstration of God’s great grace, because God patiently endured his sin and led him to Christ.

A: I am learning to have this attitude toward sin. I see my own sins as that worst and most problematic. They are the sins I am responsible for. They are the sins I am called to do something about. Whenever I am tempted to think about other people’s sins and reflect on how bad they are—which mostly happens when other people’s sin has hurt me—I need to turn back to my own sin and see everyone else sin in the light of what I have been forgiven for. Paul’s attitude that he has been given much grace needs to be my attitude as I face the broken parts of other people.

P: Lord, please help me to keep an accurate view of sin. Help me to attend to my own sin issues and to offer the kind of grace you have offered me, to others.
