Rt 66 SOAP for Sunday, November 20

SOAP = Scripture Observation Application Prayer

Lisa Adams

S: John 13: 34-35 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

O: Soon, Jesus will not be with the disciples here on earth and he just gave some very specific instructions.

A: This is one of my most favorite verses. Not because I feel so affirmed when I read it, but rather, because I feel so convicted when I read it. We must love others like he loved us. Huh. How many times in a day do I not love someone like Jesus loved me? My spouse, my kids, my neighbor, my co-worker, the guy driving slow (or too fast)… really, how many people do I encounter in a day?!?! How do I love them? This verse is all about action. And doing what Jesus did. It’s a huge commandment and one that I have to practice and think about daily.

P: God, thank you for Jesus and for the example of what love should look like. Please forgive me as I fail so often at loving others well. God, please show me how to love others and place people in my life that need desperately to know you and feel your love. Amen.
