S: Revelation 19: 11-16 Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a wine press. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
O: Jesus. These verses are describing Jesus as the conquering King and victorious Warrior. It is Jesus who will lead the charge in the final cosmic battle between good and evil. It is Jesus, in the end, who flexes his muscles and defeats evil and casts Satan and his legions into the pit of hell.
A: At this Christmas season, with the focus on mangers and swaddling clothes and Baby Jesus, we must be careful NOT to leave Jesus in the manger. Yes Jesus came to earth through the womb of a peasant teenager. Yes he was cute like all babies are cute. But this Jesus grew and died and was raised and ascended into heaven. AND (as Revelation unfolds for us) this Jesus will come back…riding on a white horse…eyes like fire…a sharp sword will come out of his mouth…and it will be “lights out” for evil once and for all. As much as I like to look at a Nativity scene while Silent Night is playing, I like this Revelation 19 scene a lot better. Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
P: Father, we thank you for this day that is yet to come. Thank you for your plan that will prevail. Remind us often that all the ugliness and evil that we see today is temporary. Amen.
