“Tebowing”
The hottest quarterback in the NFL right now is Tim Tebow of the Denver Broncos. It was the unconventional Tebow who led the Broncos to another come-from-behind victory on Sunday over our MN Vikings. Tebow has been gaining notoriety not just for his football skills, but also for his “religious fervor.”
Tebow is a follower of Jesus. He’s committed to the core (I wish he was a member of Crossroads!!).
What’s the big deal with his religion? This is where it’s a bit baffling. What Tebow consistently does is GIVE CREDIT TO GOD FOR HIS SUCCESS. In public. Shocking, isn’t it?
He gets down on one knee, bows his head and gives God thanks. Google “Tebowing” and you’ll find it to be a verb: “to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.”
And there lies the rub. While Tebow is “Tebowing” everyone else is doing something completely different—pounding their swollen chests or proudly pointing at themselves and saying, “Look at me…I did this…I’m a superstar…the world revolves around ME.”
Tebowing is something so foreign in our culture that people find it offensive and mock him relentlessly.
We who follow Jesus live with this Tebow-like worldview: All that we are, have, and hope to be is a gift from God. Getting down on a knee and giving God credit should be the norm for us.
I want Crossroads to lead the league in Tebowing. For…“through him (Christ) God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t…everything was created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)
