Too much ice cream! Is that even possible?
Last week during the crazy heat wave, I took my family out to ice cream...a few times...OK almost every day last week! One night we drove to Stillwater and visited the iconic Nelson's. I had been to Nelson's once many years ago and remembered that they served rather large scoops of ice cream. But I didn't remember the experience well enough. We ordered single scoops for my wife and I, and the kiddie size for Ellie and Jack. No one could have guessed what awaited us! The portions were ginormous! The ice cream rose a good 5-6 inches over the top of the cup. Jack and Ellie's eyes widened 5-6 inches when they saw the cups! We sat down and proceeded to tackle the mountain of ice creamy goodness before us. It was as if we were on an episode of "Man vs. Food." And that day food won! None of us finished. We barely ate our way down to the cup, and then had to commit one of the greatest sins known to mankind-we threw the rest of our ice cream away in the trash! Due to the heat, my 5 year old son's blue Superman ice cream melted quickly all over him, and it looked like he had just savagely attacked and eaten a small family of Smurfs! During the car ride home none of us felt too well. We were so full and sick to our stomachs after what we had just consumed. And over a week later no one in the family ever wants to visit Nelson's again! My kids groan when I ask them if they want to go back!
Now there's nothing wrong with ice cream or Nelson's, but...too much of a good thing can actually become a bad thing. Too often, what appears to be a good idea in the beginning, ends up becoming a giant mistake. Proverbs 4:5 says, "Learn to be wise, and develop good judgement." Every teenager I've ever met needs to memorize this verse! Whether our choices involve how much ice cream to eat or what to wear or who to hang with, remember God has not created you to be foolish! So in our culture of overindulgence, today be reminded that God wants us to be wise. How can you choose wisely today?
Please keep in mind, one.eighty meets next Tuesday evening at Woodridge Park in Cottage Grove and Fusion meets again August 14 in Eagan.
Have a great week and enjoy a little ice cream! A little.
